Reflexology has been used for centuries by different cultures around the world with its origins tracing back to ancient China, Egypt, and India, where it was used as a natural healing practice to address a variety of health concerns. For more information, please visit the 'Evolution of Reflexology' page on this website.
Reflexology provides numerous benefits, including promoting relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety, improving circulation, reducing pain, and enhancing overall well-being. And because of the extra attention on the feet, if foot pain or swelling is something a person endures, it usually alleviates.
The effectiveness of a treatment—whether it’s a surgery or a pharmaceutical product—often varies from one person to another. The same holds true for energy-based therapies. Reflexology is no exception. Some people experience big improvements after just one session, while others simply enjoy a deep sense of relaxation and calm. There are certain factors that can make someone more likely to benefit, yet the extent of those benefits remains, for now, one of life’s little mysteries.
The number of treatments recommended depends on you, what you would like to achieve from treatments and:
During a reflexology session, you can expect to feel relaxed and comfortable. Only socks and shoes are removed. Reflexologists use a variety of techniques to apply pressure to all sides of the feet, ankles and the achilles. Most issues will need one more than one treatment, although occasionally clients have achieved what they needed following just one session.
By the end of sessions, people say it feels like they’ve just spent the day at the spa.
Reflexologists refrain from diagnosing ailments, conditons or disease nor do we prescribe.
How much better someone feels after one, three or ten treatments, depends on what issues are going on in the body, if they are ongoing any other therapies and where they are in the stages of healing. Although someone may feel relaxed during their first treatment, they still may have a ways to go before feeling better.
Note:
If a person is receiving alternative therapies such as massage, acupressure, or acupuncture, then their body is already familiar with detoxing and the processing that occurs following a reflexology treatment.
On the other hand, if someone is trying out reflexology for the first time and they have a lot to be worked on, we want to be gentle for their first treatment. Otherwise, adverse affects may follow a treatment (ie achy, tired).
Whether a client would greatly benefit from a treatment longer 60 minutes, varies depending on:
Some people benefit from the extra time as it allows for loosening up the joints and/or extra time on reflexes of the body’s problematic areas. If someone has long-standing ailments, or a lot of ailments, then 75 to 90 minute treatments can be very beneficial.
We know the body adapts in various ways due to stress. How much compromise the body is doing may determine if someone would benefit from a longer treatment. When feet are rigid and the body has become slower and less flexible, a 90 minute treatment for the first couple of sessions (or once a month) can have a big impact. When conducive, longer treatments may result in better overall balance and mobility.
Some clients go back-and-forth between 60 minute treatments and 75 minute treatments.
